An exclusive-use wedding venue gives you something no shared property can: the whole estate to yourselves for the celebration, with no other event on the grounds and no strangers passing your ceremony. You set the pace and treat every terrace and garden as your own, so the weekend feels less like a hired venue than a private house you have borrowed. In France this usually means a country estate taken as a whole, with the ceremony, the dinner, and the overnight stays all behind the same gate.
Editor's Tip
Ask each venue for a full site map showing every indoor and outdoor space the exclusive-use hire includes, then plan your weekend timeline across all of them, ceremony in one spot, dinner in another, brunch by the pool, so you actually use the estate you have paid to have to yourselves.
What varies is how far the privacy actually reaches. At some properties exclusive use covers only the reception rooms, while the accommodation wing or the pool keeps taking other bookings; at others every building, courtyard, and bedroom is yours. Before you sign, pin down exactly what the hire includes, whether the on-site rooms are compulsory, and whether the kitchen is open to your own caterer. The models below set out the questions to put to each.
In brief
An exclusive-use wedding venue in France is one you hire whole, so the entire estate and its grounds are reserved for your celebration alone, with no other event sharing the property. The privacy is strongest when it covers every building, garden, and bedroom rather than the reception rooms only, and it works best when the wedding party sleeps on site across a weekend hire. Confirm before booking whether the on-site accommodation is compulsory and whether you may bring your own caterer, since these shape both the budget and the freedom.
Key facts at a glance
What exclusive use means. You hire the estate whole, so the property and its grounds are reserved for your wedding alone, with no other event sharing the dates.
Check how far it reaches. The strongest hires cover every building, garden, pool, and bedroom; some cover only the reception rooms, so confirm exactly what is included.
On-site sleeping. Most exclusive-use estates sleep the wedding party on site, and many make the rooms compulsory as part of the hire.
Freedoms that come with privacy. With no neighbouring event, many estates allow your own caterer, BYO wine, and later hours, though these vary and are worth confirming.
What it costs. Hire varies with the estate's size, the season, and whether it is taken dry or all-inclusive; accommodation and catering are the largest costs after the venue.

Château les Crostes delivers exclusive use at an intimate scale: a 200-hectare wine estate near Lorgues in the Var reserved for just 28 guests. With 12 bedrooms sleeping the full guest count, every person on the invitation wakes up on the estate, shares breakfast in the dining room, and spends the day moving between terraces, the lily-covered lake, olive groves, and formal gardens. The no-curfew policy means the celebration continues as long as the group wishes, with no neighbours across the surrounding vineyard landscape to consider.
Exclusive use here is total: every building, terrace, garden, pool, and vineyard belongs to your party for the duration. The estate produces its own rosé wines, which feature throughout the weekend. External caterers are welcome with full kitchen access. For couples who equate exclusive use with the feeling of having an entire Provençal wine estate as their private home, this property delivers that experience at a scale where every guest feels genuinely part of the household.

Château de Paon guarantees exclusive use through a mandatory accommodation purchase model: all 13 bedrooms sleeping 26 are included in the hire, meaning the full property, from the air-conditioned Grand Paon ballroom to the pool house bar, courtyard fountain, and tree-lined garden alley, belongs entirely to your group. This is exclusive use in its most literal form, where even the accommodation is woven into the privatisation rather than offered as an optional add-on.
Ceremonies for up to 120 take place in the French garden beneath a centuries-old elm tree, with the North Garden and tree-lined alley as alternative outdoor settings. The Turret Bar connects indoor dining to terrace celebrations, creating a flow between spaces that works because no other event or guest is sharing the grounds. No curfew, no corkage, and Sustainable Collection certification complete the offering. For couples who want exclusive use to mean total freedom, including over the bar, the kitchen, and the clock, this property removes every restriction.

Château Gassies combines exclusive use with the rare advantage of Bordeaux city proximity, sitting on 14 hectares of parkland just five minutes from the centre. The Charles X Reception Room, a 190-square-metre soundproofed space with original stone walls and crystal chandeliers, hosts dinner and dancing until 4:00 AM. Mandatory accommodation means all rooms sleeping 43 are included, reinforcing the privatisation. Two covered 19th-century courtyards provide rain backup without additional cost, a detail that matters for exclusive-use venues where every space must work in every weather scenario.
Green Key certification, BYO wine, and external caterer flexibility give couples control over the celebration's environmental and culinary identity. The Oak Grove clearing and Central Garden with its pond and stepping stones offer two distinct outdoor ceremony settings. For couples who want exclusive use of a large estate without sacrificing transport convenience, the combination of 14 hectares and a 10-minute drive from Bordeaux station is difficult to match anywhere in France.

Château du Puits es Pratx delivers exclusive use of a 19th-century wine estate in the Aude, set in the Minervois wine country near Narbonne. The candlelit inner courtyard, paved stone Wine Barn with its original wine-press bar, and private vineyard ceremony spaces belong to your group across the weekend.
Fifty guests sleep on-site, and the all-inclusive model with complimentary wedding planning ensures couples do not need to coordinate external vendors. Catholic and Protestant ceremonies can be arranged at the local village church. For couples who equate exclusive use with genuine escape, the vineyards surrounding this estate give a level of privacy that estates closer to cities cannot replicate.

Domaine Le Castelet hands over a 60-hectare estate in the Tarn with medieval origins, 16 bedrooms sleeping 48, and seven distinct indoor and outdoor spaces. Mandatory accommodation purchase means every room is included in the hire, and every building, courtyard, pool area, and garden belongs to your group for the duration.
Ceremonies take place under lime and pine trees beside the manor house, cocktails unfold beneath strung-lit oaks in the central courtyard, and dinner for up to 120 moves into Salle Les Écuries, a converted stable with timber frame and original stone. The estate allows external caterers and BYO wine, giving couples complete control over the menu and drink list. Château de Garrevaques has been in the same family for 18 generations, and that continuity shapes how exclusive use functions here. Owner Caroline Combes-Pouzet manages celebrations through her in-house planning service, coordinating events for 2 to 260 guests. The range is significant: exclusive use at Garrevaques works for elopements, mid-sized parties, and full-scale celebrations, with the 6-hectare park, coral-pink château, and historic salons scaling to match. The 550-year-old oak, labelled a Remarkable Tree of France, provides a ceremony backdrop no florist could replicate.
Twenty bedrooms sleep 15 on-site, and the property accommodates both all-inclusive and venue-only hire with external caterers. Fireworks are permitted, a helipad is available, and the private pool hosts next-day celebrations. For couples who want exclusive use with built-in planning expertise rather than a blank-canvas venue they must manage themselves, the 18-generation family knowledge and in-house coordination make this a notably hands-on exclusive-use option.

Exclusive use sounds absolute, but in practice it covers a range of arrangements. At its fullest, it means the estate is closed to everyone but your party: every building, terrace, garden, and bedroom is yours from arrival to departure, and no other wedding or hotel guest shares the grounds. This is the version most couples picture, and it is the one worth confirming in writing.
Elsewhere, the term is narrower. Some properties reserve only the reception rooms for your wedding while the accommodation wing, the pool, or a communal lounge keeps taking other bookings. The day still feels private where it counts, but it is not the same as having the whole place to yourselves. The difference matters most at a venue with on-site accommodation, where you want the bedrooms to belong to your guests alone.
Ask the plain question: for the dates of your wedding, is anyone else on the property at all? A venue that answers cleanly, and lists exactly what the hire covers, is offering real exclusivity rather than a marketing phrase.
Planning a weekend when the estate is yours
The point of taking a whole estate is to spread the celebration across it. Rather than one room doing every job, you can spread the day across the grounds. Hold the ceremony in the garden, cocktails in a courtyard, dinner in a converted stable or orangery, and a slow next-day brunch by the pool. Ask for a site map early and plan a route through the spaces, so the weekend has a rhythm rather than a single fixed room.
On-site accommodation is what turns a venue hire into a house party. When the wedding party sleeps within the grounds, the evening ends when everyone drifts upstairs rather than when the taxis arrive, and the morning after becomes part of the celebration. Many exclusive-use estates make the on-site rooms compulsory, so check the bed count against your closest guests before you commit.
Exclusivity often brings other freedoms with it. With no neighbouring event to disturb, some estates carry no curfew and welcome your own caterer, which gives you control over the menu, the wine, and the hours. Weigh these against the budget: an estate hired dry can work out lower per guest once catering is handled your way, while an all-inclusive weekend trades some of that control for a simpler plan.
Practical tips
Tips for This Feature
Get the full extent of the exclusivity in writing
Exclusive use is not a standard term, and it means different things at different estates. Ask the owner to confirm in writing exactly what is reserved for your dates: every building, the pool, the gardens, and all the bedrooms, or only the reception rooms. The gap between the two is the difference between a private estate and a shared one, and it is far easier to settle before you sign than to discover on the morning of the wedding.
Count the mandatory beds into your budget from the start
Many exclusive-use estates bundle the on-site accommodation into the hire, so you pay for every room whether or not you fill it. This simplifies the logistics and keeps the party together, but it locks in a baseline cost that a headline hire fee can hide. Check the bedroom count and sleeping capacity early, and match them to the guests closest to you, so the compulsory rooms are an asset rather than a surprise.
What does exclusive use mean for a wedding venue?+
Exclusive use means you hire the venue whole, so the estate and its grounds are reserved for your wedding alone, with no other event or booking sharing the property on your dates. At its fullest it covers every building, garden, and bedroom; at some venues it covers only the reception spaces. Always confirm exactly what is included before you book.
Does exclusive use include all the accommodation?+
Not always. Some estates hand over every bedroom as part of the hire, while others reserve the event spaces for you but keep letting rooms to other guests. Where having the whole property to yourselves matters, ask specifically whether the accommodation, the pool, and any communal lounges are yours alone for the dates of your wedding.
Is on-site accommodation compulsory at exclusive-use venues?+
Often, yes. Many exclusive-use estates require you to book all the on-site rooms as part of the hire, which keeps the wedding party together and simplifies the weekend but affects the overall budget. Confirm the room count and how many the estate sleeps, then weigh that against your guest list.
Can I bring my own caterer to an exclusive-use venue?+
It depends on the venue's model. An estate hired dry usually opens its kitchen to an external caterer, giving you control over the menu, dietary needs, and cost, while an all-inclusive venue ties catering to an in-house team. Ask about kitchen access and any corkage policy when you first enquire, since these shape both the budget and the creative freedom.
How many guests do exclusive-use venues suit?+
Exclusive use works across the range, from an intimate house party of a couple of dozen guests to a full weekend celebration of several hundred. The right fit is usually the smallest estate that still seats and sleeps your party comfortably, rather than paying to privatise more space than you will use.
What is the difference between exclusive use and whole-estate hire?+
In practice they usually describe the same thing: the property is yours alone for the wedding. The wording matters only at the edges, where exclusive use occasionally refers to the event spaces rather than the entire estate. If in doubt, ask whether anyone else, staff aside, will be on the grounds during your celebration.
On what exclusive use really covers
Exclusive use is a phrase, not a guarantee, and it stretches to fit very different arrangements. When you compare venues, break the question into parts: is the whole estate reserved or only the reception rooms, are the bedrooms and pool yours alone, and are the on-site rooms compulsory. A venue that answers all three plainly, and writes the answer into the contract, is offering the real thing rather than a line in a brochure.
