Just off Marseille’s Corniche coastline near Malmousque, L’Île Degaby is a 3,500m² island fortress steeped in maritime and artistic history. Originally commissioned by Louis XIV to guard the city’s harbor, the fort was later named after Liane Degaby, a celebrated Parisian performer. Known only to locals for its rocky coves, hidden sea cave, and diving spots, the island remained largely inaccessible to the public until its recent revival. Today, it serves as an exclusive event destination for weddings, offering both sea-swept outdoor terraces and a vaulted indoor hall. Surrounded by the Endoume archipelago and overlooking the Frioul Islands, it’s an unparalleled site for a destination celebration.
Events at L’Île Degaby include full island hire, local gastronomy by renowned chefs, and boat-only access for an utterly private experience. Sustainability is core to the venue’s design, featuring solar power, rainwater recovery, and composting for minimal environmental impact.
Accommodation
While there is no on-site accommodation at L’Île Degaby, the island’s private nature ensures an uninterrupted and fully immersive experience for guests. All events are designed around daytime or evening access, with carefully coordinated transfers between the island and Marseille. The nearest hotels, including coastal boutiques and luxury options in the city, are just 15–20 minutes from the boat departure point at Quai du Mucem or Quai de l’Anse de Maldormé. Guests are advised to plan overnight stays in Marseille, allowing them to fully enjoy the unique island setting without logistical concerns.
Amenities
The island includes three main event areas: the 250m² panoramic terrace (300 standing), a 200m² rooftop terrace on the fort (250 standing), and a 140m² chemin de ronde alongside the sea-facing walls. An indoor vaulted hall provides a sheltered alternative in cooler seasons. The site includes sound and lighting equipment, showers near the sea access points, WC facilities, and an eco-conscious kitchen using open-flame cooking methods.
From Paris: Guests can reach Marseille by high-speed TGV train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Marseille Saint-Charles in just over 3 hours. From the station, a 15–20 minute taxi or transfer brings you to the boat departure point at either Quai du Mucem or Quai de l’Anse de Maldormé, depending on the event coordination.
From London: Flights from London to Marseille Provence Airport take approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. The airport is a 30-minute drive from central Marseille, where embarkation for the island begins. Private boat transfers are managed directly with the venue’s maritime partner.
Events at L’Île Degaby extend well beyond weddings. The island is available for corporate functions, private celebrations, and cultural events, including anniversaries, team retreats, and pop-up experiences. The site is entirely solar-powered and features a desalination system for freshwater use, underlining its sustainable ethos. Guests can enjoy curated culinary events by Mensa, known for transforming regional produce into memorable dining experiences.
