Château de Fondat is a privately owned 13th-century estate in the Landes at the heart of Gascony, within easy reach of the city’s vineyards. A storied wedding venue near Bordeaux, it once belonged to Princess Constance of Béarn, wife to the King of Aragon’s son, and later to Henry of Cornwall of Germany.
It was restored in the 16th century by Jehan de Malartic with support from King Henri IV and later became a literary refuge, inspiring poets such as André Chénier. Today, Fondat is a protected Historic Monument, including the château, its park, Grand Pavillon, dovecote, and water mirror.
With exclusive hire, couples gain access to both interior and outdoor reception areas, the landscaped park, and full accommodation. The estate is located just 2 km from Saint-Justin, a bastide village founded by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. This venue offers a truly immersive experience in French heritage, art, and landscape.
Accommodation:
Château de Fondat accommodates up to 20 guests across its château and adjacent hunting lodge. The château itself offers four historic guest rooms: the Suite des Mariés with a super king bed and adjacent double, the spacious Suite Troubadour with two double beds, Chambre Cafarelli with twin singles, and Jehan’s Petit Dortoir with four single beds.
Each room includes a private bathroom or access to one nearby. The hunting lodge offers additional capacity with two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room with a sofa bed. All stays include bed linen, towels, end-of-stay cleaning, and the option of a baby cot.
Amenities:
The château offers multiple distinct reception areas for events. The Grand Pavillon features two reception rooms: the ground-floor Salle de Bal (110 m², for 80–90 guests) and the upper-level Salle des Lumières (150 m², up to 120 guests), both accessible and equipped for events.
A 180 m² marquee is also available from April to October, accommodating up to 170 seated guests, with period lighting and optional crystal window walls. Outdoor spaces include shaded lawns for ceremonies, cocktail areas, and a helipad. A 40 m² catering area with professional kitchen amenities is provided, and a variety of reception furniture is included.
From Paris: Château de Fondat can be reached in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes by car. Guests may also fly into Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (1 hour 20 minutes away) or take a high-speed train (TGV) to Agen or Dax, both within a 1-hour drive of the château. Onsite parking is available.
