The Venue History
14th century onwards · Medieval with Renaissance additions
The Château de la Barre has been owned by the Vanssay family since 1404, with family roots dating to 1386. The family, of immemorial nobility, served France as military officers under the monarchy, empire, and republic, with one notable hero of the Resistance. Pierre de Vanssay acquired the château in 1386, and his son Jean married Marie Choué, bringing the property into the Vanssay family. In 1589, Marin de Vanssay had important fortifications built with the authorization of the Duke of Mayenne. The Renaissance wing was added in the 17th century. During World War I, the Great Dining Room served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. A major restoration was undertaken from 2003 onwards by the current Count and Countess de Vanssay.
