A Garden Wedding on Film at Bastide de Toursainte

Clara and Constantin's wedding weekend began before the ceremony itself. With guests travelling from different countries, they organised a welcome dinner the night before, giving everyone time to arrive and spend an evening together before the wedding day at Bastide de Toursainte.

For the wedding, they asked Joffrey Wingrove to photograph the celebration primarily on film. The day took place across an 18th-century Provençal bastide, with a long avenue of plane trees, formal gardens, a fountain and interiors that gave the day several different backdrops.

Clara carried calla lilies, the ceremony took place in the garden, and dinner was arranged outside directly in front of the bastide. White flowers, fruit, candlelight and simple linens continued through the tables, leaving the architecture and gardens as the dominant setting.

Clara prepared inside Bastide de Toursainte before the ceremony, using the house's own interiors as the backdrop.

Her dress hung beside a window before she put it on, and the final stages were adjusting her veil.

Clara descended the bastide's spiral staircase, and later walked downstairs on her father's arm before leaving for the ceremony.

The preparations used what was already inside the house: patterned wallpaper, tiled floors, windows and staircases.

The ceremony took place in the park behind Bastide de Toursainte, beneath an avenue of century-old plane trees leading towards the property's fountain.

Guests were seated along the tree-lined aisle. The florals stayed simple: calla lilies appeared on the ceremony chairs, echoing Clara's own bouquet.

After exchanging their vows and rings, Clara and Constantin walked back through their guests together as everyone applauded.

Bastide de Toursainte can seat up to 200 people in this part of the grounds.

Clara's bridal look stayed as simple as the ceremony.

She wore a full-length gown with a veil and carried a bouquet of calla lilies, a sculptural flower that gave the arrangement its shape without needing a mixture of varieties or colours.

She posed for portraits both inside the bastide and on its balustraded terrace, against the tiled floors, patterned interiors and stone architecture.

The calla lilies also appeared within the ceremony styling, linking Clara's bouquet to the garden setting.

Portraits From the Piano to the Plane Trees

Clara and Constantin's portraits weren't confined to one part of the property.

Inside the bastide, they stood together beside the piano and in its doorways. Outside, they moved onto the lawns, along the tree-lined paths and onto the balustraded terrace beside the fountain.

As daylight faded and the evening lights came on, they continued outside, against the changing light.

The wedding party portraits were taken outdoors, on the open lawn and against the views beyond the bastide.

Clara walked across the grass with her bridesmaids in the late-afternoon light, with the wider group gathered against the Provence landscape and the bastide behind them.

The groomsmen wore black tie, a formal note against the relaxed garden setting.

The wedding party gathered informally on the lawn rather than posing in fixed rows.

After the ceremony, guests remained outside for cocktail hour.

Canapés were served as groups spread across the lawn, giving Clara and Constantin time to move between their guests.

Because many guests had already spent the previous evening together at the welcome dinner, the cocktail hour wasn't the first time the international guest list had met.

Dinner was set outdoors directly in front of the bastide.

A long table ran across the terrace beneath strings of lights, keeping the 18th-century façade visible behind the guests throughout the evening. Rather than moving dinner to a separate reception room or marquee, the house itself became the backdrop.

White flowers and greenery continued the simple florals from the ceremony. White linens kept the table simple, while green grapes were placed among the settings and candles took over as daylight faded.

A violinist performed beside the table during dinner, while speeches and applause punctuated the meal before the evening moved into dancing on the terrace.

White hydrangeas appeared beside the table plan, while white roses and greenery ran through the floral arrangements. Green grapes were placed directly onto the white tablecloth alongside the glassware and menus.

As evening arrived, candles and strings of overhead lights added a warmer note to the white-and-green palette.

Bastide de Toursainte is an 18th-century Provençal property approximately 10 minutes from Marseille's Old Port and listed in the French inventory of historic monuments. It is one of the wedding venues in Provence that hosts one wedding at a time, so couples have the house and grounds to themselves for the weekend. 6 bedrooms sleep up to 12 guests on site.

Outside, the long avenue of century-old plane trees runs towards a fountain and angel statue, wide enough for a car or horse-drawn carriage to approach the house. For Clara and Constantin, it became the setting for the ceremony and several of their portraits.

Inside, a series of ground-floor salons and a library alcove provide additional reception spaces and a wet-weather alternative. The ground-floor rooms were renovated in 2017, with the 6 bedrooms added in 2020.

Clara and Constantin used the estate's different spaces throughout the wedding: preparations inside the house, the ceremony beneath the plane trees, cocktails on the lawn, portraits through the gardens and salons, and dinner outside in front of the bastide.
