In between weddings we caught up with Caroline Pearsall from Wedding Music in France to find out more.

Caroline PearsallHow did you become involved in music and entertainment?

I come from a musical family where everyone played instruments, my mother the cello and my father the viola. I would often fall asleep at night listening to the sounds of string quartets as my parents played with their friends so it gave me a life-long love of the string quartet sound. When I was 15 I saw a video of the violinist Itzahk Perlman and just thought, wow the violin is so great, that’s what I want to do!

What skills do you think that it takes to be a fabulous entertainer?

Generosity, imagination, dedication, passion, alternative thinking – it’s no good repeating what others do, you have to find your own voice and then discover how to make that appeal to an audience. You have to love it, really love it and be so curious and fascinated by your work that you never feel you have ‘arrived’. It really is a constant journey of discovery.

What type and style do your brides often have?

They often like the elegance of classical music with a of twist of pop. We often play in really beautiful places in fairytale weddings. The dresses and flowers are always fantastic! They often ask for one or two really personal songs that we arrange for them for string quartet or duo so they keep the elegant glamour, but have the emotion and memory of their most meaningful songs.

How does working with a destination couple differ from a domestic couple planning a wedding in France?

I think a destination couples are bigger dreamers! They are often highly romantic, and generally very successful people and many have had important family or emotional experiences in France already, either a proposition, a holiday, a party…I find they feel the world is their oyster and they like to make dreams come true.

What is your favourite part of the process for a couple getting married in France?

I love being able to provide the music for their special songs – music already means so much to me anyway, that when people request a song that has real importance for them I really feel it when I play it for them.

I’ve been at a few weddings where I literally had tears in my eyes whilst playing their songs for them, because the way they were looking at each other and all the emotion of the moment. It’s very special to be involved in people’s lives at this magical moment and I love being part of a day filled with such happiness. Life is truly beautiful on such days and I love stepping into their dream-come-true moment!

What is the funniest story about being an entertainer?

There are so many! Hard to choose. Stories range from funny things that happen during songs to having to work with other entertainers who you sometimes find rather bizarre and who provoke giggles amongst the other performers! The artistic world is full of characters.

Generally at weddings it’s more about the love between the couple but the best man’s speech sometimes has us roaring with laughter. I also work with dancers, and something what tends to happen with them is that mid-performance they realise the dress was not attached as securely as thought!!

What is the best thing about being an entertainer?

The ability to communicate and perform with such a large variety of people, travelling and to spend time working towards creating beautiful and meaningful work. Music does cross all kinds of borders.

I have performed with people with whom I couldn’t speak the same language and we still had a great time. Music gives out an energy which can totally transform an atmosphere or feeling and leaving that kind of positive vibe and allowing people to step out of daily worries for a while is truly magical. Sharing the love you have for something is precious.
